Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income

Do You Have a Temporary Disability? You May Qualify for SSI.

Supplemental Security Income is commonly referred to as “SSI.” Unlike Social Security Disability (SSD), which provides financial assistance to permanently disabled workers, SSI provides financial assistance to people who have little or no income, regardless of their work histories.

SSI helps meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter to those who are disabled, blind, or aged. To find out if you qualify for SSI benefits, contact John Bales Attorneys at (800) 225-5564 or fill out a free initial consultation form.

Available SSI Benefits

SSI benefits are available to people who are older than age 65 or who are blind or disabled adults or children. You must also:
  • Have limited income
  • Have limited resources
  • Be a U.S. citizen or one of a certain category of aliens
  • Live in the United States
Should you qualify for SSI benefits, you will receive a monthly payment based on your level of need and the maximum federal benefit rate. In Florida, qualified individuals may be entitled to additional benefits and will be automatically eligible for Medicaid.

Financial Eligibility

To be eligible for SSI, you must have limited income and limited resources. Income includes money that you receive from the following:
  • Work
  • Benefits programs (SSD, workers’ compensation, unemployment, the Department of Veterans Affairs)
  • Friends or relatives

Your resources are considered:
  • Cash
  • Bank accounts, stocks, and bonds
  • Land
  • Vehicles
  • Personal property
  • Life insurance
  • Anything else you own that could converted to cash and used for food or shelter
Because of the variety of income and resources considered, determining your financial eligibility for Supplemental Security Income can be difficult.
